Thinking about taking a new company car or hanging on to the one you\u2019ve got? Here\u2019s the low\u2011down on how the tax rules are about to creep up over the next few years\u2014and why your electric run\u2011about might not stay the bargain it looks today.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

First, a quick refresher. If you can use your company car for personal trips, the taxman treats that perk as extra pay. They start with the car\u2019s list price (plus any factory\u2011fitted toys) and multiply it by what HMRC calls the \u201cappropriate percentage.\u201d That percentage depends mainly on CO\u2082 emissions, with a diesel penalty if the engine isn\u2019t squeaky\u2011clean. You can knock a bit off for any contribution you\u2019ve made, or for weeks when the car sat idle at the office, but that\u2019s the headline formula.<\/p>\n

From April 2025 the percentages all rise by a full point, up to the usual 37\u202f% ceiling. That might not sound like much, but it means pure\u2011electric cars jump from a 2\u202f% charge to 3\u202f%. On a \u00a330,000 Tesla or Nissan Leaf, a higher\u2011rate taxpayer will fork out roughly \u00a3120 extra in 2025\/26. Employers get stung too: the Class\u202f1A National Insurance rate climbs from 13.8\u202f% to 15\u202f%, and of course a bigger benefit equals a bigger NI bill.<\/p>\n

Looking one year further, 2026\/27 sees another nudge for cleaner cars. Anything pumping out 74\u202fg\/km of CO\u2082 or less moves up an extra percentage point; the dirtier models hold steady. In 2027\/28, HMRC tightens the screw again, this time only on vehicles at 69\u202fg\/km and below.<\/p>\n

The big leap comes in 2028\/29. Electric cars jump two points to 7\u202f%, and the whole \u201celectric\u2011range\u201d break for hybrids disappears. Cars that emit between 1 and 50\u202fg\/km are all slapped with a flat 18\u202f% charge\u2014bad news if you\u2019ve been enjoying the super\u2011low 5\u202f% rate on a long\u2011range plug\u2011in. Everyone else moves up one point, and the top band rises to 38\u202f%. A year later, 2029\/30 repeats the trick: zero\u2011emission cars hit 9\u202f%, the 1\u201350\u202fg\/km crowd move to 19\u202f%, and the overall cap climbs to 39\u202f%.<\/p>\n

In plain English: the Government is clawing back revenue as more drivers go electric. If you keep a company car for three or four years, don\u2019t just look at today\u2019s headline rate\u2014check where it will land in 2027, 2028, and beyond.
